"O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water" (Psalm 63:1).
In attempting to set some goals for this year, I found that every goal I set intensifies my need for God. I have therefore adopted the above portion of scripture as my personal prayer for 2010. It is the key to achieving my goals for this year. Without God, I am absolutely destitute and starving. It is of utmost priority therefore that I am serious about seeking God in prayer, reading and studying His Word.
What is it like to be thirsty and hungry after God? Unless I was lost in a desert (like David was), I wouldn't know what it would be really like to go for days without anything to eat or drink. I know I would do everything that I could to look for food and water. And, if I found it, I would be so hungry and thirsty that I wouldn't care if the food and water didn't taste good, or if it wasn't good for me. I would eat it because I want to survive. But God, has so much more for us than just survival.
In Psalm 42:1-2, King David hungered and thirsted for the Lord and said, "As the deer panteth for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. Where can I go and meet with God?" King David wanted the Lord more than anything else. God's presence was food and water to him.
From past personal experiences, I know what it was like to wander in the desert of my own desires, lost, confused, when everything seemed hopeless. What the world offers leaves us empty. Friends you once depended on for help soon leave your life. A broken marriage leaves you painful and empty. Broken friendships like broken promises leave us with emptiness. Some of us still live with memories of past failures. King David experienced that same sense of loss and emptiness and he cried out to God. Who do we cry out to in our time of need?
Jesus said in John 7:37-38: "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him." Jesus was quoting from the same scripture in Isaiah 55: 1: "Come all who are thirsty, come to the waters...". Only in the Lord Jesus can we quench our spiritual thirst. His Spirit will flow through us, and streams of living water will flow from us.
God is the Source. He draws us to drink deeply from all that He has for us in His Word, in His presence and in prayer and praise. He promises we will never be thirsty again!
Prayer: Dear Lord, my need for fellowship with You is greater than any other need that I have..., In Jesus Name, Amen!
